Why run a WHOIS search?

To check whether a domain name is available to be registered.

To get information about the domain name's owner, contacts, managing registrar, or server names.

To send a message to a domain name's administrative and/or technical contact.

How can I obtain identification data?

In order to comply with the requirements of national data protection legislation, and in particular the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), only limited data is available via the WHOIS lookup service.

  • If the owner is a (private) natural person, their identification data is hidden, except for its country of residence.
  • Technical and administrative contact data is masked by default, and as such this information is not available.

To get this data, a written query with a reason given must be sent to the .lu registry via the dedicated 'WHOIS data disclosure request' form. The request's legitimacy will then be evaluated by the registry, and any request deemed excessive or unfounded will be rejected.
