In October 2023, Dr Guillaume-Jean Herbiet, technical manager of the .lu service, will once again teach at the Digital Learning Hub (DLH) - a continuing professional education structure in Luxembourg. His aim is to train students, professionals and IT enthusiasts willing to administer DNS servers and/or secure their DNS infrastructure.
A first training course - combining theoretical training and practical experience - focusing on the Domain Name System (DNS) administration will complement the one dedicated to the DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) protocol and its functioning. These two concepts are closely associated since implementing DNSSEC on the DNS infrastructure, one of the core elements of online communications makes it possible to secure an online presence and ensure the security of domain names.
A DNS server or names server is a computer connected to the Internet. It contains information about the services related to a domain name and answers any queries about this information. For example, it translates a domain name into an IP address to enable access to a website/s and/or email inboxes linked to a domain name.
DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) technology authenticates DNS records using cryptographic keys to ensure that each domain fits perfectly into a trusted chain within the tree of the Internet-based naming system.
DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION (19 & 20 October 2023)
On 19 and 20 October 2023, within the 'Domain Name System Administration' training course, participants will gain a solid theoretical basis and concrete hands-on experience to enable them to embrace best practices and avoid caveats in operations. On completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- have a clear overview of the DNS namespace and current infrastructure;
- have a practical and up-to-date understanding of the DNS protocol, relevant for daily operations;
- configure and manage DNS authoritative servers (used to publish information associated to a domain name);
- configure and manage DNS resolvers (used to query information associated to a domain name);
- analyze DNS queries and troubleshoot issues.

SECURE DNS INFRASTRUCTURE WITH DNSSEC (27 October 2023)
On 27 October 2023, the 'Secure DNS infrastructure with DNSSEC' training course will enable participants willing to sign their DNS zones to improve or gain confidence in their signing procedures thanks to hands-on experience and best practices. On completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- fully understand DNSSEC principles, purpose and advantages;
- anticipate and mitigate DNSSEC risks;
- confidently implement simple to more advanced DNSSEC-signing infrastructure using open-source software;
- analyze, troubleshoot and correct the most common DNSSEC-related issues;
- acquire DNSSEC confidence best practices.
